BMP stores raster pixel data and can use different colour depths and storage variants. Many BMP files are uncompressed or only lightly compressed, which can make them much larger than modern formats such as WebP or JPEG.
Because BMP commonly stores image data with little or no lossy compression, it can preserve pixel values without JPEG-style artefacts. The trade-off is usually a significantly larger file.
PNG is generally more efficient for lossless web graphics and transparency, while JPEG is more compact for photographs. BMP remains useful for compatibility with software or workflows that specifically expect bitmap files.
For BMP, MimiFile currently offers 9 conversions to other formats and 10 conversions from other formats.
